We don't just talk about business.
At ILS, we live it.

Our Philosophy

The Gap No One Is Closing

The legal industry has a fundamental problem:
lawyers don't understand business,
and business people don't trust lawyers.

A business owner walks into a lawyer's office with a problem. Maybe they need to terminate an employee. Maybe they're negotiating a deal. Maybe they're being sued. What they want to know is: what should I do? What they get instead is a legal lecture. A recitation of statutes. A list of risks. A pile of disclaimers. In the end, they often leave the room more confused and afraid than when they arrived.

The lawyer did their job. They identified the legal issues. They flagged the risks. They used the correct templates. But they never answered the real question. They never said: here’s what it means for your business, what I’d do, and why.

We may be very skilled at what we do. But skill without purpose is just theatrical performance. When a client asks "can I terminate this employee," they are not asking for a recitation of California Labor Code. They are asking: how do I protect the company I spent a decade building?

Every law firm says they are "client-focused" or "business-minded." None of them mean it the way we do. We did not set out to build a firm that knows the case law better or uses more updated templates. We built a firm that knows the unspoken anxieties and ambitions of business owners, helping them navigate law with confidence.

Our MISSION

ILS was built to close that gap

At ILS, we start with the business and work backward to the law.
The law is the tool.
The business outcome is the objective.

What We Stand For

Three Commitments

Our culture rests on three principles. They are simple to say and hard to live. But they are non-negotiable.

I

The Foundation

Business Comes Before Law

Law was not created for its own sake. It was created to facilitate how our society functions — to enable commerce, to protect rights, to resolve disputes so that people can build and create and live.

Somewhere along the way, our profession lost sight of this. We began to treat legal expertise as the end, rather than the means. At ILS, the result that the law delivers is the most important thing — not the process, not the technique. The result.

Read the client's website before the call. Understand their industry. Know their competitors. Ask the extra question. The lawyer who does this is the lawyer the client will trust with everything.

II

The Expectation

Builders, Not Passengers

There is a difference between working at a firm and building a firm. Working at a firm means you show up, do your work, go home. Building a firm means you think beyond the matter in front of you.

You develop relationships with clients — not just service them, but own them. You mentor the people around you. You bring ideas about how to grow, how to improve, how to do things better. You see a problem and you solve it. You see an opportunity and you bring it to the table.

ILS is for people who want to look back in twenty years and say: I built that.

The Expectation

Builders, Not Passengers

III

The Difference

Believe in the Collective Good

Most firms run on an eat-what-you-kill model. You guard your work. You protect your relationships. You measure your success against your colleagues, not alongside them. The firm is just a platform for individual ambition.

ILS is built on a different belief: that a group of people working together — genuinely, not performatively — will always outperform a collection of individuals working alone. That is not idealism.

One chopstick is easily broken. But bundle ten chopsticks together, and they become a formidable force. Selfishness builds empires that collapse. Selflessness builds institutions that endure.

The Difference

Believe in the Collective Good

Building Bridges.
Creating Impact.

We Are Bridge Builders

We build bridges between business and law, across legal systems, languages, and cultures

—the firm people have long wished existed.

What This Means At ILS

Our philosophy is not abstract. It shapes how everyone at this firm approaches work every day.

In Litigation

The first question is not "what are our claims?"
It is "what does this client's business need to look like
when this is over?"

Great litigators start with one question: What does this client’s business need to look like when this is over? The best strategy is never just about winning arguments—it is about protecting the business itself by reducing cost, uncertainty, and opportunity loss, so every legal move serves a larger commercial outcome.

In Transactions

The first question is not "what does our template say?"
It is "what is this client trying to build, and how does this deal advance that goal?"

At the heart of transaction work is a simple question: What is this client trying to build, and how does this deal advance or threaten that goal? The role of a lawyer is not to block every risk in the name of caution, but to help clients take smart, informed risks with the right structure, protection, and judgment—so the law supports growth instead of standing in its way.

In Immigration

The first question is not “what visa should we file?”
It is “how do we help this client move and keep talent without slowing down the business?”

Business immigration is about more than obtaining visas. It requires aligning immigration strategy with business priorities while maintaining full regulatory compliance. We help clients place the right talent in the right roles, manage critical timelines, anticipate legal and operational risks, and build immigration strategies that support long-term workforce planning and sustainable growth.

At Every Level

Every interaction with a client reflects whether we truly speak business — or just claim to.

We hire associates because we believe they can one day lead at this firm, and we expect that same sense of ownership from every team member—from paralegals and staff to partners. Every client interaction matters. The way you communicate, the care and urgency you bring to your work, and the effort you make to understand a client’s business all reflect what ILS stands for.

We Speak Business

Not a tagline. A discipline. It is how we practice law,

how we treat each other, and how we make every decision at this firm.

If these commitments resonate with you, you may have found your home.
ILS is built for people these principles inspire—not burden.
